Fishing in the high Sierra

The day was too nice to stay at the cabin so buddy Lloyd and I set off to one of the many high Sierra lakes about a hour and a half drive from the cabin. The day was bright and warm and we were rewarded with a spectacular morning at about 8500 feet.

The view was breathtaking looking in any direction. We were near the tree line and the air was crisp and warm.

Large banks of snow feed pools of clear cold water which flow into the lake. The only water feeding into the lake is from the melting snow. The lake is deep enough that it doesn't freeze to the bottom allowing the fish to survive the winter. No planted fish here.... all native.

The lake was calm with just a hint of a ripple fed by a light breeze.

Lloyd waits for a brook trout to rise to the fly he has presented. Tough to keep your mind on the fishing when it's so pretty.

Lloyd shows off one of the eight "California Keepers"he caught. That's a fish that you can see the head and tail when held in your fist like this. No keepers today.... it was strictly catch and release for Lloyd and strictly not catch and not release for me. Lloyd caught all the fish and I took all the pictures.... I got as good a deal as he did. Home this morning and wondering why we're doing it. Guess we'll be back in a couple of weeks. In the meantime we need to get ready for the next big travel adventure. We leave for Oregon on August 18th. More from the road in late August.
